Abstract
Summit is a three-movement concerto for solo trumpet and medium-size orchestra. Two of the concerto's fundamental unifying elements are lyrical melodic content and a principal intervallic set from which most harmonic support is derived. Attention to hierarchical phrase relationships and subtleties of melodic structure have a greater bearing on the trumpet content than applications of technical virtuosity. Metrical regularity of accompanimental material defines a foundation through which the melodic voice has freedom for metrical irregularity and syncopation. The variance in degrees of both harmonic and rhythmic tension of melodic content is an important aspect to development of phrase structure and pacing. An important orchestrational influence is the bolder and more dramatic accompaniment possibilities available through the trumpet's natural potential to dominate an orchestral texture.
