Abstract

Zhou Long’s official biography places him within the prevailing phenomenon of twentieth-century Chinese American composers whose music was and is still born out of the cultural exchange between the East and West. Zhou Long’s Postures for Piano and Orchestra was co–commissioned by the BBC Proms and Singapore Symphony, each orchestra giving its own premiere in 2014 with German–Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger and Chinese–American conductor Lan Shui (水蓝). This dissertation will include Zhou long’s aesthetic concept and provide a theoretical analysis of his piano concerto. The purpose of studying this piano concerto specifically is to continually shed light on the relationship and fusing of both musical cultures based on current materials. Researching unique characteristics of this piece can attract new attention, to treat it as one of the most important works in today’s classical repertoire.
