Abstract
The origin of Ukraine can be traced back to at least the ninth century AD. Kyivan Rus’ was the first state that was established among the Eastern Slavs, and it took its name from the city of Kyiv (now the capital of Ukraine). Kyivan Rus’ lies at the origin of the Ukrainian nation. Like any other country, nation, and ethnicity, habitants of the current Ukrainian territory were developing their literature, arts, music, dances, culture, and musical instruments. From the end of the seventeenth century until the present day, we can observe that Ukrainian history, language, music, and its unique culture were often censored and prohibited. This research paper uncovers the musical heritage of Ukrainian composers who wrote solo works for flute or for ensembles with the flute up to ten instruments. The research provides information on composers and their works that date as early as the middle of the nineteenth century up to the most recent works of the twenty-first century.
