Abstract
My project focused on examining the different social determinants of health that contribute to the disparity in weekly COVID-19 cases by zip code in Miami-Dade County. According to Healthy People 2030, social determinants of health can be grouped into these five categories: economic stability, education access/quality, healthcare access/quality, neighborhood/environment, and social/community context. I examined the cultural, socioeconomic, and structural factors that give rise to this disparity in COVID-19 health outcomes. I utilized these four cities and neighborhoods in Miami Dade County as case studies for my project: Liberty City, Little Haiti, Coral Gables, and North East Coconut Grove. I also examined the challenges Haitian immigrants may experience in the United States and how it affected their COVID-19 health outcomes. Challenges include poverty, language barriers, racial discrimination, unemployment, acculturation, and ineligibility for some forms of health insurance.
