Abstract

Double bass pedagogy Nineteenth-century performance practice String instrument technique National schools of playing Bow technique divergence Reception studies in music

This document addresses a gap in existing scholarship on nineteenth-century Western European double bass pedagogy, as this scholarship typically examines major conservatory schools—such as those in France, German-speaking regions, and Italy—independently. While modern scholarship often presents these traditions as distinct pedagogical units, historical evidence suggests a more interconnected development shaped by shared repertoire, performer mobility, and institutional exchange. By investigating these points of contact, the project offers a deeper understanding of how ideas circulated among regions and contributed to the evolution of the instrument and its teaching.

Drawing on method books, conservatory documents, historical writings, and case studies of influential bassists, the research traces two principal channels of transmission: repertoire-driven pressures that prompted changes to technique, tuning, and instrument setup, and the pedagogical networks through which teachers, students, and method authors carried technical concepts across borders. Through these pathways, innovations—ranging from tuning reforms and left-hand systems to emerging standards in instrument configuration—were continually adopted, adapted, or resisted in response to local and regional needs.

By synthesizing these interconnected developments, the study demonstrates that modern double bass pedagogy emerged through a dynamic exchange of ideas rather than through isolated institutional traditions. This more integrated perspective highlights the extent to which nineteenth-century bass instruction was shaped by cross-regional influence and provides a stronger historical foundation for understanding the blended pedagogical landscape in use today.
