Abstract
The projected U.S. population in 2050 of those aged 65 years and over is 83.7 million, which will be double that of 2012 [1]. As of 2010, trauma is the fifth leading cause of death in all age groups and the ninth leading cause for those 65 years and older (2.3% of deaths in this cohort) [2]. As the population ages, older patients make up an increasing portion of hospital trauma activations. One New York hospital group saw the portion of trauma activations for those 65 and older nearly double over 10 years, from 18% in 2005 to 31% in 2016 [3].
