Abstract
For the patient who is able to participate in their care, the single layer, long stretch
wrap is a cost-effective option. Packaged as a single component, these wraps would
remind one of a higher quality sport-type wrap, with higher tension when stretched.
Most of the available products are also marked with guides to indicate the appropriate amount of stretch. They are relatively easy to teach to a patient or caregiver who
has good hand dexterity and strength and the ability to grasp the concept. They are
manufactured of a relatively dense material, so padding of bony prominences and
tendons may be necessary. The manufacturers recommendations should be followed
as to the method of application, but generally they are applied as a spiral from the
toes to the knee. Because of the tendency to slip and separate, these wraps are
generally reapplied once or twice daily, and can be laundered in cold soapy water
when soiled and reused.
