Abstract

capacity cognition frailty geriatric polypharmacy risk
Age-related physiologic and pathophysiologic changes have implications for preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative care of older adults. There is considerable variability in the extent of age-dependent changes across organ systems and between patients. Therefore, screening for conditions such as cognitive impairment, frailty, depression, and polypharmacy should be employed to guide procedure and anesthetic selection and inform patient–provider discussions.
