Abstract
In this chapter, we provide a review of past research and current debates in acculturation research. The chapter is organized as follows. First, we discuss who is included when we use the term acculturation. Next, we provide definitions of acculturation from different disciplinary perspectives, followed by an examination of measurement issues in the field. We then discuss the concept of acculturative stress and the ways in which acculturation can lead to psychological distress. To conclude, we outline a contextual perspective on acculturation and adjustment and make recommendations for improving research on acculturation in general and the relationship between acculturation and adjustment in particular.
