Abstract
Rhinosinusitis is a commonly encountered condition in children. Children average six to eight upper respiratory infections per year, of which 5–10% are complicated by acute rhinosinusitis.Acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) is a bacterial infection of the sinonasal mucosa lasting up to 4 weeks (28 days). Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a larger spectrum of pathologies, affecting the paranasal sinuses for more than 12 weeks. The most common organisms in rhinosinusitis are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis.Rhinosinusitis is a condition that is managed in most cases by medical treatment. Surgical therapy is required for orbital or intracranial complications of ARS or for children with CRS who remain symptomatic despite maximal medical treatment and optimal control of associated comorbidities.
