Abstract
We developed a simulated patient (SP)-based formative assessment for medical students who are completing a required geriatrics training component in their internal medicine clerkship. The focus of the assessment was on falls risk. This activity is part of a broader curriculum that addresses one of the core competency areas—falls and mobility—included in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) geriatric competencies for graduating medical students. Students individually perform a focused falls risk assessment in a simulated outpatient setting with a 76-year-old patient whose daughter expressed concern about the patient’s walking.
