Abstract
As patients are able to live a healthy life as they become elderly, clinicians will encounter them in their ward, operating room and critical care settings. Clinicians will be challenged with the altered physiology, polypharmacy and different requirements needed for a comprehensive understanding and treatment. Geriatric patients commonly suffer from anemia and often require blood transfusions to maintain adequate oxygen supply/demand in light of present comorbidities and acute clinical scenarios. Geriatric patients are often treated with liberal transfusion strategies, but more recent guidelines urge for a restrictive transfusion strategies. Interestingly, these guidelines are not specific for the geriatric patients and are made for the general adult patient population with data gathered from mostly adult patients.
