Abstract
Diagnosis can be made on the basis of clinical findings and biopsy. Serum
analysis consistent with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and elevated parathyroid
hormone levels can be associated with CUA. Radiographic studies reveal calcified
vessels, known as ‘‘pipe stem’’ calcifications (68). Calcification of the intima and media
of small and medium vessels in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, which is readily
visible on biopsy, can result in vascular compromise, ischemia, and necrosis (Fig. 7)
(68,69).
