Abstract

Chronic Itch Intraepidermal Nerve Fiber Itch Sensation Nerve Fiber Spinothalamic Tract
Since 1660, itch has been defined as “an unpleasant sensation associated with the desire to scratch.”1 This definition encompasses both sensory and cognitive aspects of the itch experience. However, the manner in which this sensory stimulus transmits from the skin to the brain for processing has only recently been elucidated. This chapter will describe the flow of neural information that pertains to pruritus from the peripheral to the central nervous system.
