Abstract
Unbiased screening has resulted in major conceptual and technical breakthroughs in fields as diverse as cancer biology and retinal development. A relatively new approach to unbiased screening, high-content screening (HCS), allows the quantitative analysis of complex cellular phenotypes as an outcome measure to search for genes and compounds that produce a particular cellular profile. This chapter will describe the advantages of this approach when applied to neural regeneration and technical difficulties that need to be overcome. Several examples in which HCS has uncovered genes and compounds that can enhance neuroprotection and/or regeneration will be described.
