Abstract
This chapter discusses human–computer interaction in facilities layout. The human–computer interactive system functions in a particular manner. Initially, the user would interactively create a layout by indicating the locations for the various departments. At this point, the user can explore a variety of options, such as interchanging locations of any two departments, specifying a totally new layout, evaluating the cost of a layout, using one of the aids provided, and viewing the from-to chart. The aids would be used to formulate an overall plan or strategy. The initial layout created can be based on the results of an aid such as cluster analysis. The ensuing interactions would involve iterative use of the various aids to develop alternative arrangements that are an improvement over the previous one. Research aimed at obtaining a better understanding of this iterative process is needed to reveal possible weaknesses in the existing decision-support structure and indicate the potential usefulness of supplementary aiding devices.
