Abstract
Accidental genital trauma (AGT) tends to be more commonly seen in pediatric emergency departments and requires consultation with a surgical provider. AGTs can be grouped into straddle injury, nonstraddle blunt, and penetrating trauma. Blunt or penetrating injuries may not present with genital bleeding and without careful examination, an unrecognized injury to the urogenital tract may be present and delay of repair can result in urethral and/or vaginal stenosis or chronic fissuring. Surgical evaluation can often be performed in emergency departments with varying levels of sedation for patient comfort and adequate inspection and/or repair. However, for larger lacerations and those with concern for penetrative trauma, surgical evaluation and correction in the operating suite with anesthesia is warranted. This chapter will discuss the recognition and repair of AGT.
