Abstract
Though skin barrier function depends on the epidermis, dermal tissue is needed for
the optimal functional and cosmetic results when grafting with cultured epithelial
grafts (61). Extra-cellular matrix is important for cultured epithelial autograft ‘‘take’’
in the postoperative period. While fibroblasts play a role in remodeling, keratinocyte differentiation, and matrix synthesis, it may take years to regenerate actual
dermis-like tissue.
