Abstract
All clinical trials require safety monitoring, but not all trials require monitoring by an independent group external to the trial sponsors and investigators. Data safety monitoring board (DSMB) is a group of independent individuals with relevant expertise that reviews accumulating data on routine basis from one or more ongoing trials. DSMB monitors the safety of trial participants as well as the validity and scientific merit of the trial. DSMBs are generally established for large, randomized multicenter trials that evaluate interventions intended to prolong life or reduce risk of a major adverse health outcomes. Appointment of independent members to DSMB without any conflict of interest is of paramount importance because it promotes objectivity and reduction of potential bias thus increasing the credibility of trial’s conclusions.
