Digital photographyDigital photography undoubtedly plays an important role in the field of dermatology, a visual specialty that relies on pattern detection to make a diagnosis. The use and interpretation of digital images enhances the visual literacy that is integral to dermatology. In this chapter, various technical aspects of digital photography and the many uses of digital images in dermatology are examined. After describing how digital cameras function, explaining relevant photography terms, and discussing important image storage formats, the chapter explores the many roles digital photography plays in patient care, medical academia, patient educationPatient education, and researchResearch. Moreover, the importance of safeguarding patient privacy is highlighted in the sections discussing informed consent and HIPAA compliant regulations and practices. Finally, the topic of underrepresentation of skin of colorSkin of color in dermatology textbooks and medical literature is highlighted with focus on the lack of diversity that persists and needs to be addressed.
