Abstract

antiemetics emesis nausea palliative care vomiting
Nausea, vomiting, and retching are common symptoms in patients with advanced illness. Effective therapies exist for nausea and vomiting unrelated to chemotherapy. Antiemetics may be selected empirically or by consideration of potentially involved emetogenic pathways and neurotransmitters, followed by selection of medications that antagonize the corresponding receptors. Additional controlled trials of antiemetics in palliative care patients are needed.
