Abstract
A diagnostic interview is an essential first step in assessing and treating children with mental health concerns. This chapter introduces key considerations and recommendations for proficiently conducting a diagnostic interview with youth experiencing a range of clinical concerns based on empirically supported literature. This chapter also deconstructs various methods of collecting diagnostic information through observation and standardized assessment tools, emphasizing their ability to tailor treatment to the unique needs of youth. Expanding on the fifth edition, this chapter integrates updated version of psychological assessments and measures related to recent DSM-5 and DSM-5-TR revisions alongside more current psychometric data, wherever applicable. In response to the increased availability of telehealth care options, this chapter provides additional guidance and strategies for effectively navigating remote evaluations. Readers will be informed about factors that influence the diagnostic interviewing process in youth, including the significance of developmental considerations, rapport-building strategies, a case study for illustration, and considerations for diverse youth.
