This is a unique handbook on a unique topic, and with a unique lineup of contributors. Whereas most handbooks deal with topics contained within the bounds of a given psychological subdiscipline, the present handbook crosses those boundaries and draws on contributions from numerous areas of psychological science, including social and personality psychologies, motivation science, political psychology, developmental psychology, community psychology, gender and race psychology, as well as educational, clinical, and school psychologies. The reason for this diversity lies in the topic to which this handbook is dedicated, the universal human need for significance and mattering. As we will try to show in what follows, the quest for significance and mattering is the quintessential social need, the "mother of all social needs" one might say. And in so far as sociality is among the defining features of humans as a species, the strivings for significance and mattering indeed insinuate themselves into nearly all domains of human functioning. The wide swath that chapters in this book cover attest to this ubiquity.
