Abstract
Imagine what it is like to encourage heart surgeons to use controlled lung perfusion without ceasing mechanical ventilation for all cardiac surgeries requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We have no doubt that it will be a harsh challenge, and it will be necessary to blaze a steep trail to reach that goal. At this time, lung perfusion associated with mechanical ventilation is not a usual concept in heart surgery concept; however, we believe that ongoing studies will bring additional information to allow both approaches to run together through the pathway of progress in heart surgery with CPB.
