Abstract
This chapter focuses on the correlates and consequences of mattering as citizens. Building upon the theoretical framework outlined in the previous chapter ("Mattering as Citizens: Conditions"), we review selected correlates, manifestations, and signs of mattering as citizens, including autonomy, participation, self-determination, and belonging. Next, we review the serious consequences associated with the presence or absence of mattering among citizens. Finally, given the importance of mattering to a happy and healthy citizenry, we conclude with a review of best practices for fostering mattering for citizens around the world.
