Abstract
The burgeoning field of Nutritional Psychiatry is based on the interplay between nutrition, inflammation and the immune system, and mental illness. With the discovery of the gut-brain axis as a key mediator between the immune system and inflammation, it has become apparent that nutrition and dietary choices can have a major impact on immune and inflammatory responses in the body, in turn affecting physical health. Emerging research has found that both over- and under-activation of the body's immune and inflammatory responses can contribute to neuropsychiatric disorders. This has thus inspired research into dietary and nutritional interventions for addressing mental illness. While higher quality evidence is still needed, current research into the role of nutritional and dietary interventions as modifiable targets in this network between the immune system, inflammation, and mental illness appears to show promise.
