Abstract
This chapter introduces practitioners to the strategies and techniques of One Person Family Therapy (OPFT). It is aimed at family therapists and counselors who want to make immediate, practical use of structural and strategic family therapy techniques but who either prefer or need to work with only one person rather than a whole family in most therapy sessions. Anyone wishing to become truly expert in OPFT should become thoroughly familiar with the theory behind it. A more complete account is available in Szapocznik, Perez-Vidal, Hervis, Foote, and Spencer (1983); Szapocznik and Kurtines (1989); and Szapocznik, Kurtines, Hervis, and Spencer (1984). Briefer accounts are in Szapocznik, Kur-tines, Foote, Perez-Vidal, and Hervis (1983, 1986) and Foote, Szapocznik, Kur-tines, Hervis, and Perez-Vidal (1985). The structural family precursors of the work are described in Minuchin (1974, 1976) and Minuchin and Fishman (1981). Precursors of the strategic components of OPFT are described in Haley (1976) and Madanes (1981).
