Abstract
The raw surface areas that grafts cannot cover (this occurs in mesh grafting,
patch grafting, or fissures between grafts and surrounding areas) heal by secondary
intention, which is divided into three phases: the inflammatory phase, the proliferation phase, and the remodeling phase (26-28). The inflammatory cells, including
macrophages, produce various cytokines and lead to the induction of granulation
tissue formation, reepithelialization, and wound contraction. Granulation tissue
consists of new vessels that migrate into the wound (called angiogenesis or
neovascularization) and the accumulation of fibroblasts and dermal matrix
(called fibroplasias). Reepithelialization occurs as a consequence of keratinocyte
migration and proliferation.
