Abstract
The foundation of precision medicine (PM) is that prevention and treatment strategies take individual variability in biological, environmental, social, and behavioral factors into account. This approach has the potential to eliminate health disparities (HD) and add clinical and economic benefits to standard patient care practices. To date, minorities have been under‐represented in PM research and existing approaches are often not optimal for understanding HD and developing strategies to eliminate them. In this chapter, we review the history and evolution of PM, identify gaps related to HD, and discuss barriers and facilitators to success in this field. We will also describe PM methods that can be applied to identify and address HD and highlight challenges and opportunities in the field.
