Abstract

Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi apparatus Lipid bilayer Protein misfolding Ribosomes Signal sequence Translocation
All proteins are synthesized within membrane-bound cells. However, to be functional a substantial number of proteins must be transported through membranes. Cells possess dedicated export systems that first identify and then transport (or translocate) specific proteins through membranes. Defective functioning of these protein translocation systems are implicated in a number of human diseases.
