Abstract
‘Religious thought’ explains how, although he was profoundly influenced by Hinduism, Christianity, and Jainism, Gandhi's religious thought cut across all of them and was in a class by itself. For Gandhi, Truth or cosmic spirit was beyond all qualities including the moral. Following the long line of Indian sages he argued that the existence of God was a matter of experiential certainty. The experience of feeling God's presence did not come naturally to all. Since the existence of God could not by its very nature be rationally demonstrated, all that a believer could ask the sceptic to do was to undergo the required training and find things out for himself.
