Abstract

The syndrome of resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) is characterized by reduced tissue responsiveness to thyroid hormone (TH) despite elevated circulating levels of free triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). It is associated with an inappropriately normal or elevated serum thyrotropin [also known as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)] characteristic of impaired thyrotroph sensitivity.
