Abstract
This chapter explores the idea that the scaling of digital enterprises is qualitatively different from the scaling of industrial firms. In particular, the leanness with which contemporary firms can scale their business by drawing on and adding to digital infrastructures helps them to increase the clock speed of their activities. This increase in speed makes it possible to grow the digital enterprise more quickly compared to its industrial counterpart. The chapter discusses the “productive techniques” of the digital enterprise and examines a set of themes relevant to enterprise growth in the digital age.
