Abstract
Knowledge of the surgical procedures and the ability to tailor an anesthetic for optimal patient outcome and safety can be daunting challenges to the neuroanesthesiologist. Anesthesia for the surgical treatment of epilepsy involves many considerations: antiepileptic medications and their side effects, the effects of anesthetic agents on a patient's seizure threshold, anesthetic techniques and agents that allow mapping for seizure foci. There are several neurosurgical procedures to locate and then treat seizures. Anesthesia techniques may include a general anesthetic, monitored anesthesia care, or an awake patient.
