Abstract
Different studies have shown the inhibitory effect of interferons on dermal
fibroblast growth and the production of collagen I and III. Intralesional injection
of recombinant human interferon alpha-2b or interferon gamma in keloids has given
promising albeit variable results (63,64). Other treatment interventions include
cryotherapy alone or in combination with corticosteroid injections, radiation with
or without surgical excision, Ultraviolet A1 radiation, intralesional 5-fluouracil
injection, bleomycin dripped onto the scar followed by puncture with a 25-gauge
needle to allow penetration into the dermis, local pressure therapy, and laser surgery
(60). Further controlled studies are required before recommending these modalities
for the treatment of keloids in the pediatric population.
