Abstract
Teledermatology uses telecommunication technologies to diagnose and treat skin diseases. This chapter will outline the current uses of teledermatology within Mohs surgery. Teledermatology can be used both before Mohs surgery for preoperative consultations as well as for postoperative evaluation. Teldermatology allows for virtual consultations prior to Mohs surgery. Additionally, pathologists can utilize telemedicine to diagnose skin lesions which permits speedier communication with Mohs surgeons; the use of teledermatology prior to surgery helps avoid unnecessary visits to the hospital and decreases a patient’s waiting time for surgery. Furthermore, telemedicine can be used after a patient undergoes Mohs surgery. For example, patients may receive postoperative information through video or messaging platforms. Additionally, telemedicine allows for better communication between all specialties (i.e., dermatology, plastic surgery, etc.) within a patient’s care team to prevent postoperative complications. However, there are some challenges within teledermatology including patient privacy, legal barriers, a physician’s lack of confidence, technical difficulties, and reimbursement policy. Despite these obstacles, Mohs surgeons should still utilize teledermatology as it allows for enhanced access to care for patients who may be disadvantaged due to location or socioeconomic status.
