Abstract
Treatment and management of chronic wounds has a significant economic impact on healthcare and patient quality of life. As a result of theCovid-19 COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing amount of telehealthTelehealth options are becoming available to patients. Specifically, wound careWound care within the field of teledermatologyTelewound (telewound care) is an emerging field that shows promise for improving patient health outcomes and lowering the cost of care. Patients are currently able to reach providers virtually through real-time conferencing platforms and share images and data through smart-phone applications. Imaging technologiesTechnology paired with artificial intelligenceArtificial intelligence and further innovations are currently in development. Despite the benefits of this technologyTechnology and rapid growth of telemedicineTelemedicine, the implementation of telewound practices has had varied success internationally and presents its own unique set of challenges. Thus, this chapter aims to provide an overview of telewound care and to serve as a starting point for further exploration into this emerging practice. After providing a brief overview of wound careWound care, we discuss telewoundTelewound care specifically and review current available telewound options and practice. We also discuss upcoming innovations and describe the practice from a global perspective. Lastly, we highlight the benefits and discuss the challenges faced by patients, providers, and innovators involved in telewoundTelewound care.
