Abstract
Research is reviewed on early touch perception (temperature, texture, and weight perception) and infants’ behavioral and physiological responses to pain, as well as effective touch interventions including nonnutritive sucking, kangaroo care, and massage therapy. The limited literature on affectionate touch and touch deprivation is also reviewed. Potential underlying mechanisms for touch effects and future research directions are proposed.
