Abstract
The field of touch and pain in infancy have only recently been explored. Touch is the earliest developing sense and even as early as the newborn period, the sense of touch is well developed, and the newborn experiences pain. In this piece research is reviewed on early touch perception including temperature, texture, and weight perception by infants. Studies are also reviewed on infants’ behavioral and physiological responses to pain and effective interventions for pain including stimulation of other senses through aromas and sucrose and activity such as nonnutritive sucking.
