Abstract
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement
(
TAVR
) is a catheter‐based aortic valve replacement. It is primarily used to treat severe degenerative aortic valve stenosis. The first TAVR was performed in humans in 2002. Since then, TAVR procedures and devices have continued to evolve with more simplified and technical advancements in the valve and the valve delivery mechanisms, including a decrease in the size of the delivery catheters. This has simplified the procedure and further reduced the risk of complications. In this chapter, we will describe in detail the step‐by‐step approach of the two TAVR systems widely used for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis: the balloon‐expandable SAPIEN valve system (Edwards Lifesciences) and the self‐expanding CoreValve Evolut system (Medtronic).
