Abstract
The eye may be subject to mechanical trauma due to a multiplicity of injuries to several ocular structures. This chapter will focus on common vitreoretinal injuries, leaving several specific conditions to be presented in other chapters. The most common injuries include commotio retinae, chorioretinitis sclopetaria, vitreous and subretinal hemorrhage, retinal tears, and retinal detachment. Some of these conditions are not amenable to or do not require vitreoretinal surgery, but when surgery is indicated, timing can be an important element in management.
