Urban Sprawl as Economic Stimulus

American Empire and the Canadian Oil Sands, pp.51-61
Palgrave Macmillan US

Abstract

Automobile Dependency Consumer Durable Real Estate Urban Sprawl General Motor
Throughout the post-World War II period, the United States did not aggressively pursue solar energy to enhance global energy supplies (as noted in the preceding chapter). Similarly, the United States actively sought to prevent the development of plutonium as a source of power (as described in Chapter 1). Therefore, the seeming need to bring the oil sands to market follows directly from the United States ignoring/suppressing energy alternatives to fossil fuels.
