Abstract
Despite the continuous efforts for enhancing discoverability of resources, the unprecedented events that we have faced these past couple of years have demanded librarians a higher level of creativity and connectivity. Social distancing, telecommuting work, and remote instruction amid the constraints and challenges imposed by a global pandemic and coexisting economic, social and political issues, have reshaped the way libraries communicate and operate to provide the best service to their communities.
At the University of Miami Libraries the Metadata and Discovery Services Department (MDS) has been paramount in standing out for initiative while supporting their users. MDS had to reinvent itself by adapting, reassessing, and responding to the emerging and shifting needs of their patrons. Implementing on new ways of communicating and operating, MDS focused on promoting connectivity by increasing access and discoverability of the UM Libraries' materials and collections through metadata enrichment, bibliographic enhancement and reclassification, advanced cataloging efforts, and streamed workflows.
This presentation seeks to share some of the projects and workflows that our team has innovated on during this recent period of uncertainty and change. It intends to engage an inclusive audience interested on exploring ideas and methods to enhance and promote access and discoverability of library resources.
