Abstract
Despite his notable contributions to jazz, Drew Gress remains largely overlooked in existing literature. This study endeavors to fill this void by thoroughly examining Gress’ role as a bassist and composer, focusing on his albums 7 Black Butterflies, The Irrational Numbers, and The Sky Inside. This research aims to provide insights into Gress’ innovative compositions and improvisations by employing three distinct analysis techniques: compositional, graphical, and timbral analysis. The analysis will delve into structural frameworks, thematic developments, harmonic progressions, visual representations of musical elements, and the sonic textures employed by Gress. This study seeks to illuminate Gress’ significant contributions to jazz and provide valuable guidance for musicians and scholars seeking to enhance their performance techniques, improvisation skills, and compositional practices by offering a comprehensive understanding of his musical language and stylistic innovations.
