Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality style and style of loving among people who are currently involved in love relationships. Subjects were 228 volunteers (114 couples), ranging in age from 18 to 82. They completed three questionnaires--one was a measure of personality style based on Millon's (1969) typology of eight personality styles, the second was a measure of lovestyle based on Lee's (1973) typology of six lovestyles, and the third was a background inventory that assessed demographic characteristics of the respondents. The results of the study indicated that there is a moderate relationship between personality style and style of loving, while a strong relationship exists between partners' lovestyles, and no consistent relationships exist between partners' personality styles. In addition, differences in lovestyles were found to be related to age, sex, and length of relationship. These results are discussed in terms of past research on love, mate selection, sex-roles, and attitude similarity.
