Abstract
This dissertation shows that news disseminated through social media and proliferated by network effects can influence public opinion and influence markets. It is demonstrated that measuring social media responses to news and other economic and political messages can be used to: improve on existing conventional polls that are less frequent to increase their availability, provide predictive capabilities, and construct indexes of public importance that are not currently measured in conventional ways.
