Abstract
Composite is an orchestral work approximately sixteen minutes in duration. It is a one movement work comprised of seven sections of various lengths. The composer utilizes repetitive techniques which retard the rate of change and focus attention on a limited number of musical events.Composite's structural oganization is based on intuitively proportioned durations (time lengths) of sections. The sections, in turn, are organized according to the following methods: modular construction, layering of elements, or gradual transformation.Two pitch sets of eight tones generate the tonal material. In this work the pitch set is utilized to limit the amount of pitch change in time.In Composite the composer integrates certain minimalistic concepts concerning time and perception with materials and devices that are an established part of the contemporary compositional language.
