Abstract
A study of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in the Compressed Air Injection System of an IC Engine was conducted to further explore the potential of the system. The Compressed Air Injection System is an alternative intake induction improvement method on a small displacement IC engine. The system injects compressed air into the intake runner of the engine to improve the volumetric efficiency of the IC engine. The injection will provide extra air at a lower temperature, as well as provide extra momentum to the naturally aspirated air drawn by the intake vacuum. This concept proved to be effective and improved 17.18% of the volumetric flow rate on a Toyota 2TC engine head on a flow bench experiment. This study simulated the air injection system in the CFD environment and discovered the flow characteristic inside the intake runner. By utilizing the CFD software, the flow behavior can be visualized. The layer mixing effect was observed, and the momentum transfer location was discovered. The valuable information will be used for future study and improvement processes of the Compressed Air Injection System.
