Abstract

Ferlinghetti, Lawrence Musical settings. Choruses, Secular (Mixed voices) with chamber orchestra Scores.
I Am Waiting is for chamber orchestra and chamber choir that uses text from Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem I Am Waiting. The poem was written in 1958, but still resonates with world issues today. The poem explores topics such as war, inequality, environmental protection, religion, and freedom. The work consists six movements and five interludes that are performed without any breaks in between each other. Each movement focuses on one line from the poem, which expresses a different tone from the other. The contrast between the movements are accomplished through different textures, harmonies, and rhythms. The interludes are chamber groups within the orchestra ensemble. Each interlude helps transition one movement to the other. The variety of instrumentation, textures, and harmonies throughout the entire piece demonstrate the abilities of the large ensemble and allow the interpretation of the poem to come through .
