Abstract
Personaphrenia is a large scale composition for traditional big band instrumentation approached from a contemporary classical angle. This includes utilizing dense harmony, formal structure, aleatory improvisation and extended techniques not common to standard jazz writing, but also utilizing skills like improvisation akin to jazz musicians. The piece's extra musical influences come namely from the Greek temperamental approach to personality. The four temperaments Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic each contain multiple personality traits. Each section in the piece derives from one of the traits and strives to personify them musically.
